Merchant Paying Versus Customer Paying Options
The most common way to pledge support to projects is by connecting impact to your chosen online sales.
Alternatively, you can give your customer the power to ‘opt-in’ to creating impact via a toggle.
We’ll take a closer look at both options below.
Merchant Paying - Configuring ‘Impact by order’
Select this option if your brand is looking to create impact on behalf of your customers (i.e. pull plastic with every purchase).
We recommend building this cost into your product pricing or marketing budget as you see fit. Details of how much each impact costs can be found on the Project Marketplace.
Here’s is a step-by-step outline of the multiple ways you can activate the Merchant Paying option.

1. Activate ‘Impact for all orders’ quantity
This option is for brands that want to create impact with every order. You have control of how much impact (i.e. how many pounds of ocean plastic you remove) will be tied to every Shopify sale.
First, you must select the numeric count for Impact quantity. Do so by increasing the plus sign.
As you can see from our screenshot, we’ve selected an Impact quantity of 1.
Remember, we have chosen to support ocean plastic removal for this example for which an ‘order’ equals 1lb of plastic and trash removed from the ocean, at a cost of $2.
Therefore, each time we make a sale through Shopify, 1lb of plastic or trash will be removed, and we (the Merchant) will be charged $2 per order.
There is no maximum limit to the amount of Impact you can tie to each Shopify sale. If you’d like to remove 100lbs of plastic from the ocean with every sale, you can!
Tip: If you would prefer to restrict impact to specific order thresholds or specific products in your Shopify store, select 0 for this option, and see other options below.
2. Order value impacts
‘Order value impacts’ allows you to tie impact to a minimum dollar amount spent.
In the example shown in the screenshot above, we’ve chosen to add 5 Impact orders for any total order above $100.00.
This is especially powerful for promotions you may want to run to encourage higher total order values. Customers who know that you will remove an extra X lbs of plastic from the ocean with every $100 purchase may be inclined to purchase more products from your store to reach that threshold!
Tip: If you have chosen 0 as your ‘Impact for all orders’ number, you can still take advantage of the ‘Order value impacts’ selection. This can be particularly useful if you sell lower priced items or are on a budget and need to meet certain order thresholds before committing to Impact orders.
3. Product impacts
This option allows you to tie impact to specific products in your Shopify store and is as simple as changing a product's status to ‘On’.
In the screenshot below we’ve selected 3 products from our store, each with an Impact quantity of 1. That means when any one of these products are purchased, we’ll remove 1lb of plastic from the ocean.
Product impact is a powerful tool for promoting specific products.
Looking to showcase a certain SKU or shift inventory? This makes running a sustainable promotion super simple.
Or maybe you have a product that is particularly relevant for the environmental project you’re supporting - a reusable bottle, for example. You can show customers that you’ll remove an equivalent or higher amount of plastic from the ocean when they purchase that specific product.
As you can see in the screenshot below, we’ve selected 3 products to tie environmental impact to. There is no limit to the amount of items you can choose, and they can be changed at any time.

Customer Paying - Configuring ‘Customer opt-in’
Just starting out? Want to test the effectiveness of an impact campaign? Select this option if your preference is to pass the costs of a project to customers (if they choose to opt-in).
This feature allows you to design a shopping cart and check-out toggle which will allow your customers to opt in to support your selected environmental project.
Enabling customers to pay is a good option if you’re looking to preserve budget and/or give your customers more control over their contributions.
With this option, you’ll have the added bonus of knowing which of your customers is supporting projects, giving you the opportunity to segment your email list and tailor future sustainability marketing directly to them.
Tip: Customer Paying can be used in conjunction with Merchant Paying for increased impact!
Take a look below for a deep-dive on the Customer Paying option.

1. Auto-enabled on/off
This feature allows you to preselect the customer opt-in toggle as ‘on’ when they land in the shopping cart.
You can turn this selection off if you’d prefer to let your customer toggle on the switch themselves.
2. Widget placement
Select where in your cart your users will see the toggle.
Depending on your website design, you may have a preference for left, right, or center.
3. Toggle Design
This is where things get super custom!
You can also edit the content and style of your customer opt-in toggle. Update colors and sizing to seamlessly match your website design.
The preview to the right will show your changes in real-time before you publish to your live site.
Tip: Call To Action copy like ‘Pull a pound of plastic’ will be dictated by the project you are supporting

4. Save changes
Finally, click “publish to site” at the top of the customer opt-in page to update those customizations.
Regardless of which option you choose, after completing these steps your Shopify store is now connected and you’re making huge impact via your e-commerce business! 👏
