US Youth Mental Health Support
Read more about how we’re supporting youth-led healing, advocacy, and mental wellness across San Diego County
The Location
📍 San Diego County, California
FRONTLINE operates across several trusted community partner sites, prioritizing neighborhoods with limited access to culturally relevant mental health resources:
- Southeast San Diego – YMCA Jackie Robinson
- Spring Valley – San Diego Youth Services
- East County – Grossmont & Cuyamaca Colleges
- Central San Diego – Mesa College
By hosting the program in familiar, community-rooted locations, youth are able to participate consistently, build trust with facilitators, and engage in mental health conversations within spaces that feel safe and culturally aligned.
Across San Diego County, young people—especially in underserved communities—face systemic barriers to mental health resources.
FRONTLINE helps bridge that gap by providing access, mentorship, and guided opportunities for youth to lead conversations that strengthen community wellbeing.
The Problem
Many young people experience significant mental health challenges yet lack access to culturally relevant support systems or opportunities to openly discuss their experiences.
Key issues include:
- Limited access to youth-centered mental health education
- Persistent stigma surrounding emotional expression
- Fragmented support for youth navigating trauma, identity, and social pressures
- Lack of representation in traditional mental health services
- Few leadership pathways that allow youth to influence community wellbeing
Without intervention, these barriers prevent young people from developing the confidence, emotional tools, and peer support networks needed to improve mental health outcomes.
The Solution
FRONTLINE creates a pathway for youth to become mental health advocates and community leaders through a year-long, structured program that includes:
- 25 culturally grounded, trauma-informed workshops
- Mentorship and leadership coaching from trained facilitators and guest speakers
- Creative advocacy projects, including short films, spoken word, visual art, and zines
- Peer support spaces where youth learn emotional regulation, communication, and conflict navigation
- Financial and access support, with corporate sponsors funding stipends, meals, and materials
- A countywide celebration during Mental Health Awareness Month where youth share their work and insights with the broader community
This model centers youth voices, fosters confidence, and equips young leaders with practical tools to change conversations about mental health in their families, schools, and neighborhoods.

The Process
FRONTLINE follows a comprehensive year-long structure designed to nurture leadership at every stage:
- Monthly Workshops: Trauma-informed sessions on mental health, identity, storytelling, self-regulation, and leadership.
- Mentorship: Ongoing check-ins, youth coaching, and guidance from community role models and guest speakers.
- Applied Learning: Youth design and produce storytelling or advocacy projects that reflect their lived experiences.
- Support & Equity: Corporate sponsorships ensure equitable access through stipends, meals, transportation support, and materials.
- Community Celebration: A culminating showcase where youth share their creative projects, reflections, and personal growth with peers, families, and community partners.
This process equips youth with the tools, confidence, and support to become leaders who reduce stigma and strengthen mental health conversations across their communities.
The Impact
FRONTLINE strengthens community wellbeing by empowering young people to become catalysts for healing within their own networks.
Participants consistently show:
- Increased confidence and emotional regulation
- Greater willingness to discuss mental health with family and peers
- Stronger connection to community and cultural identity
- Leadership growth that extends into school, work, and home life
The effects ripple outward: youth influence their families, classrooms, and broader community environments—creating culturally grounded dialogues around mental health that many households have never experienced before.
The program also supports intergenerational healing by bringing youth stories, creative expression, and advocacy into shared community spaces.
